Is this the way you feel when you are at work?Nothing you do ever seems to go right?
Your supervisor got it in for you?
(Probably not really, but sure seems like it, doesn't it?)
Every time you turn around does seem like someone sneeks in and piles more work on you?
You finally get to your days off, there's the phone and guess who wants you to come in and work.
You get to finally use your vacation time, but can't get it approved because, "We just to busy right now for anyone to take time off."
So any of these describe you and your job? Me?...I should've photoshopped myself into this picture or better yet, I should get a coworker to take my picture. (I wish my area was that organized, I would not need the rope to ensure my safe exit.)
Onto how to quit a job.
First:
Make sure you are going to make at least what you are presently making. Until you are you can't quit. Why would you want to make life even more miserable by going from some money to a little money or worse no money. Only quit one job if your income is increasing, not decreasing.
But, I can make so much money on the internet if I can just spend that 8 hours a day working on the net instead of going to my job and Walter Mart. Maybe or Maybe Not. Got your product ready to launch? Got any income streams establlished yet? Got your autoresponders set up and ready to go? Not going to launch your own product, ok you got your affiliate accounts set up? How big of prospect list you got already? If you don't know what I am talking about, or think you can do that later, you are setting yourself up for failure right from the start. Not only that, how will you pay your bills, put gas in the car, keep food on the table, pay your rent or mortgage, the list goes on and on.
Second:
Make a list of your expenses. What expenses? Reread the previous paragraph. You need to know how much income you will need each month to break even. This is your first and ultimately the most important business goal. You need to know where you are and where you need to be at all times. If you don't do this you will regret it, as in more month than money.
Third:
Decide where you want to be in 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 18, 24, 36, 48, and 60 months. This is your second most important goal. It gives you a series of targets, i.e. if in 1 month you want to be meeting all expenses, then in 3 months you want to be at 3X your expenses, and so on. So what this means is that by 3 months you want to be meeting expenses and have twice as much left over to put in the bank for emergencies, retirement, etc.
If you fall behind, and at 3 months you are only say 1.5X expenses or still just meeting them don't panic. If you are having trouble breaking through refresh your marketing strategy, reexamine what you are doing and how you are doing it. Most of the time just making one little change makes a huge difference. For example, say you are using a blog based marketing strategy, but just are not getting the traffic you were hoping for. You need to research what services are on the net for letting the world know about your blog and use them. Say you are only updating you MySpace with an RSS feed. How about FaceBook or Technorati. Technorati is a blog directory service and it indexes blogs so people can find them easier and the search engines all use Technorati to discover new blogs. See, by adding one place more to the submission list your potential for a huge increase in traffic just got a lot bigger.
Fourth, Don't Quit! (Well not yet anyway):
Before you quit your job, for this one, you should be making at least 3X your current wages. You want to move up in income not down. Get your income streams established and flowing good, before you try and life off them or you'll starve and believe me Alpo is not a gourmet meal -My dog even hates the stuff.
Be patient and keep your job while you get the bugs worked out of your new job. If you have a product failure or the company producing the products you are promoting goes under, you a safety net (your job) to fall back into and this allows you time to evaluate what went wrong and get back into the game without the worry of how to pay the rent, etc.
Once your Internet income is steady and stable, and you are versed at finding products and promoting them, and you are averaging 3x your wages then it's time for step 5.
And last, and on purpose the last, Fifth:
Finally, I can quit! I got all those steps running like a fine tuned machine. Not so fast. Quit properly, explain to your supervisor that your situation has changed and that you must tender your 2 weeks notice of resignation to allow you to fulfill your business obligations, and tell them you appreciate the experience during the time you were with the company.
Why should I? I do hate this job after all!
Because if at some future date you really mess everything up, and you would have to set a new world record to beat companies such as ENRON or GLOBAL CROSSINGS, you remember they went bankrupt and were all over the news about how people lost their retirements, their financial futures were in ruins, and the list goes on and on. Yes, you would have to top that, to really mess up. But let's say somehow you do, if you did what I suggested in the beginning of the paragraph, you can go back to Walter Mart or where ever you had your job and the odds are you can get back into the company, because you left of stellar terms instead of saying here's my two weeks and sorry it's two weeks late. Never burn bridges if you don't have to, you may need to cross back over them in the future.
Besides, if your former supervisor happens upon one of your products they are more likely to buy from you, than if you left them cold. Remember they too, are potential customers and you want their business as much as your competitor.
